Behind-the-Scenes at Pickering House: August 2016 Update

Pickering House Wolfeboro before renovation

First of all, thank you so much for the tremendous outpouring of ideas to help us select a name for the new inn we are planning at Pickering House!  It has been so much fun (and very helpful) to read everybody’s ideas and comments. If you haven’t already participated, the link below will be active until September 1 and we’d love to hear from you!

Help Us Name the Planned Inn

We hope to announce the new name this fall, so stay tuned!

As for physical progress on the Pickering House renovation, there’s more going on than meets the eye. While the outside is unchanged, a lot has happened on the inside.

Interior demolition is complete and we can now see the full condition of the “bones” of the main house. The good news is that there are some really cool beams and overall the framing is in good shape. However, as you often find in older buildings that have been renovated repeatedly, some important headers and support beams had been cut in a few places.

Now we enter the planning stage. The rough concepts for the floor plan are underway. Working with the new design, Nancy Nichols and her staff from Team Engineering will identify framing modifications and structural work necessary to support all the furnishings, appliances, bathrooms, etc. that an inn will require (needs have changed quite a bit since the 1800’s!). Mechanicals such as heat and plumbing also need to be mapped out and located.

At the same time that planning is going on for the main house, we will also be evaluating what needs to be done to save the wonderful barn and prepare it for new uses.

Our goal this fall is to have a realistic construction plan and identify a construction start date. We look forward to announcing the construction start once planning and permitting is in place!

Thanks so much for your interest and support.
